With populism on the rise and the now infamous “fake news” revealing how hate groups endanger the democratic debate, one of the key accusations against the “system” is that “the media” is biased and doesn’t represent the lived experience of the citizens. Our aim is to show how communications problems are pervasive in our societies, and how democracy is undermined by the sometimes very literal absence of a common language between the media and part of the population.
